Composting
Long before this planet was inhabited by people, composting was just something that happened. A miracle of nature, in every location vegetation was growing, there was composting. One of our ancestors, a pioneer of horticulture, then realised that crops grew better near or next to piles of rotting vegetation; recycling, and controlled composting, began. Recycling is now a major issue in this century and the art of producing compost for our own gardens is commonplace, but the theory remains the same – bacteria and fungi and other creatures will decompose any natural product which once lived to create a nutrient rich material to enhance the soil. The Harrod Horticultural team has selected a range of products which will all produce excellent garden compost, and by encouraging recycling, will also benefit our precious environment at the same time. And with a charge for the collection of compostable material possibly being levied on householders, there is no better time to follow Mother Nature's example...

The ComposTumbler turns a traditionally ten-month process into a 14 day process! Fill with your organic waste from the garden and kitchen and give the drum a couple of spins once a day. The efficient mixing allows the bacteria to work fast, resulting in perfect compost in just two weeks. Any liquid produced by the composting process, which traditionally leaches into the soil is easily drained off and can be used as high potash feed. These products have helped to produce some fantastic compost for our Kitchen Garden.

Wormeries
Wormeries

Why do you need a wormery? Worm cast is best used as a first class natural fertilizer, use it sparingly and selectively around the garden - a little goes a very long way! Studies have shown that worms convert organic waste into the best natural fertilizer known – worm cast. It contains from 5 to 11 times the quantity of available N – P – K (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) than the soil the worms consume to produce the cast. The worms also drastically improve the soil structure. Each worm can convert up to their own weight of waste into worm cast each day. Any liquid that drains from the wormery can be used diluted as a liquid food or as a compost accelerator. Your plants will grow faster and be healthier. It will also improve texture and flavour in crops as the soil condition will be significantly improved over time using this natural and highly complex food.
We've selected the best of the existing wormeries and where we can't find one which meets our standards, we've designed and manufactured our own. You'll also find various packages of live worms to top up your existing wormery, or perhaps set-up a brand new venture. Either way, you'll end up with worm cast absolutely erupting with nutrients, a great looking garden and hundreds of little composting experts to help!
